Growing Peppers Indoors – Guidelines & Tips
Growing peppers indoors is a great way to enjoy fresh, home-grown peppers when outdoor growing conditions aren’t ideal. However, growing peppers indoors requires some special care. Here are some useful guidelines and tips for getting your pepper plants off to a great start.
1. Choose A Suitable Pepper Variety
When growing peppers indoors, it’s important to choose a variety that will thrive in your climate and with the available light and space. For instance, some peppers will do better in cooler climates and others require more sunlight. Consider the full-grown size of the pepper and its tolerance for temperature swings between day and night. Some good options for peppers that can be grown indoors include jalapenos, serranos, cayennes, bell peppers, Anaheim peppers, and poblanos.
2. Provide Enough Light
Peppers need a lot of bright, indirect sunlight to thrive indoors, so set up your pepper plants near a sunny window or an artificial grow light. Keep in mind that if the temperature is too hot near the window, it may be better to move the plants further away and use a grow light. Aim for 8-12 hours of light each day.
3. Use Containers with Drainage Holes
When it comes to the actual containers for your pepper plants, choose ones with good drainage holes. Add layers of soil, stones, and gravel to the bottom of the container to help with drainage.
