Growing Peppers Indoors – Guidelines & Tips

Growing peppers indoors can be a great way to add some flavor to your home-grown vegetables and herbs. But because most peppers thrive in warm temperatures, it can be a challenge to get them to grow indoors. With careful attention and the right conditions, though, you can successfully grow fresh peppers indoors.

Types of Peppers

When you’re growing peppers indoors, it’s best to choose smaller varieties such as sweet or mild bell peppers, Hungarian wax peppers, and jalapenos. Other hot peppers, such as habaneros and serranos, take longer to mature and require more heat.

Selecting Containers

Be sure to select a container that is large enough to accommodate the mature size of the pepper. A six-inch pot should be adequate for smaller varieties. The container should have drainage holes in the bottom. Additionally, for peppers with thicker stems, you may want to use a taller container to provide additional support.

Choosing Soil & Fertilizer

For your pepper plants, you’ll want to use a light, fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. You can purchase a soil mix specifically for peppers at most garden centers. Additionally, you may need to fertilize your pepper plants regularly to ensure they get the nutrients they need.

Providing Light & Heat

Peppers need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, so you may need to use grow lights if your home doesn’t provide adequate sunlight. During the winter months, lights should be run for 12-16 hours per day. In addition, peppers also need warm temperatures, preferably between 70-85F.

Watering & Pruning

Pepper plants need consistent moisture, so be sure to water your plants regularly. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, and water the soil itself, not the leaves. As the plant grows, you can pinch off any extra flower buds or leaves in order to encourage better growth.

Harvesting & Storing

When the peppers are ripe, you can pick them off the plant and use refrigerator storage to keep them fresh for up to 1-2 weeks. You can also try drying the peppers, either by dehydrating in a food dehydrator or by spreading out the peppers in the sun for a few days.
