Growing Peppers Indoors – Guidelines & Tips
Peppers are a great option for growing indoors, as they need little space and equipment to thrive. Plus, with regular watering and the right amounts of soil, light, and temperature, you can have a delicious harvest. Here’s a few tips and guidelines for growing peppers indoors.
Start Your Garden
Equipment: Start with a pot large enough for the peppers to expand (recommended 10-15”). Make sure the pot has a drain hole at the bottom so excess water can escape. Peppers like a well drained soil with high organic matter, so make sure your soil mix has a blend of peat moss, compost, and coarse sand.
Planting: Plant your peppers 6-8” apart, and bury the seed to the depth recommended on the seed packet. Once the seed is planted, cover the soil with mulch or organic matter to help retain moisture.
Location: Peppers need plenty of sun to thrive, so make sure to place your pot in a bright window. If you don’t have enough sun, you can purchase grow lights to supplement the light.
Watering: Water your peppers often enough to keep the soil moist but not overly wet. This should be done in the morning hours. A light mist on the leaves in the evening can also help.
Fertilization: Feed your peppers with a fertilizer that’s specifically made for vegetables. Follow the instructions on the package for how much and how often to fertilize.
Once your peppers are finished growing (approximately 70-90 days from when the seed was planted), use a sharp pair of scissors to clip the stalks of the peppers. Enjoy them raw or cooked in variety of dishes!
