Monitored alarm systems can be costly, but there are other security system options available to protect your home and campsite. One of these options is to build a DIY perimeter alarm. By setting up a perimeter alarm at your property, you can alert yourself to any possible intruders.

The most basic form of perimeter alarm is simply using motion sensors that are placed around the boundaries of your property. These can be as simple as motion activated lights that come on when triggered. Motion sensors can even come with a wireless remote that alerts you to any movement it detects.

A slightly more involved DIY perimeter alarm solution is to make your own home security system from components such as reed switches, motion detectors, and a few pieces of electrical wire. The reed switch is the simplest of these components and is easy to install. All you need to do is attach it to the perimeter of your property, which could be done with metal wire or even rope. When the switch is triggered by a potential intruder, it will send a signal to a connected motion detector, which will alert you.

If you want to take your DIY alarm system a step further, you can use more advanced components such as infrared sensors, PIRs or passive infrared sensors, and camera enunciators. An infrared sensor can detect the heat given off by an intruder’s body, while a PIRs can detect both body heat and movement. Camera enunciators give you visual proof of an intruder, as they will take a snapshot of the intruder as soon as it detects motion.

Once you have your components outlined, you will need to construct the alarm circuit. This is done by connecting the sensors to a circuit board and wiring the required wires to each sensor. The final step is to program the circuit board, which is usually done with basic coding.

Building your own DIY perimeter alarm system can be a great way to protect your home and camp from potential intruders. It may take some time and patience, but if done correctly you can have a reliable and effective home security system.
